Abstract

|
The author reviewed female depression according to female psychology in terms of Freudian psychoanalysis. With this, author introduced a woman case who was utterly depressed on account of the conflict with mother. And also author introduced an other depressed woman who shows typical penis envy. Female psychology is characteristic. They have particular physical experiences such as menses, pregnancy, childbirth, and menopause. And also they undergo social restrictions. But female depression could not be explained through only the above characteristics. Female is inclined to be considerably depressive characteristic from the standpoint of Freudianism. Freud called female psychology a ’dark continent’(1926a). His original formulation was that male and female development is identical until the child discovers the anatomical differences between the sexes. Girl’s discovery of their lack of a penis gives rise to feelings of inferiority, penis envy, masochistic surrender to a second-class status, and anger at the mother, who is blamed for the deprivation(Moore BE & Fine BD 1990). According to Freud(1924, 1926b), women has less sadism, are more affectionate, connected with stunted growth of her penis. Women are more jealousy and are ethically inferior. In the Freudian concept of female psychology, women are tragic existences who feels inferiority complex from the begining of life that they perceive themselves without penis, at the same time, they are depressive existences in destiny. In the other hands, they are growing existences in the process of overcoming the inferiority complex and aggression. On the case that their personality grows appropriately, they accept naturally themselves’ feminine identity, they feel happy from their femininity. However, other girls who undergone deficit from maternal care through childhood, or the girls who were raised by a single parent(especially only father), had mainly the problems such as psychological conflicts and need dissatisfactions. The girls could not admit their feminine identity, and easily indulges in severe depression by tribial frustration.
